Redhawks Outlast Falcons 2-1 in Women's Soccer at Interbay
September 25, 2002

SEATTLE, Wa.-Nichole Savageau and Jordan Bieler scored a goal each as Seattle University outlasted Seattle Pacific University 2-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Wednesday night at Interbay Stadium.

The Redhawks scored both goals in the first half. At 15:04, Savageau beat two Seattle Pacific defenders in a race to the ball after a shot by teammate Tafara Pulse careened off the left crossbar. Savageau hit the back of the Falcon net from six yards out.

At 35:45, just before intermission, the Redhawks got their second and final goal of the match. After a misplay near midfield by a Falcon defender, Jordan Bieler gathered and controlled the ball and fired a left-footed shot to the left post. Bieler lofted the ball over the top of charging SPU goalie, Erin Pierce (Fr., Milwaukie, Or./Rex Putnam).

If the first half took some of the wind out of SPU's sails, the Falcons began the second half with renewed resolve. At 47:12, Megan Lienhard (Fr., Everett, Wa./Cascade) netted her second score in four games. Falcon forward Katy Nydam (Fr., Oak Harbor, Wa.) rocketed a hard shot toward the Seattle University goal from the 18 yard line. SU keeper Emily Schifferling made a diving save, but the ball skipped to the six yard line where Lienhard was stationed amidst traffic for the follow up score.

SPU staged several good attempts to tie the game, but none hit the back of the net.

The match was very physical. Seattle University fouled 15 times while the Falcons registered 13. Seattle Pacific held quite an edge in corner kicks, 8-2.

Schiffering saved four balls for SU while Falcon keepers Pierce and Jennifer Hull (So., Eugene, Or./Sheldon) combined for six.

With the win, Seattle University (3-1, 5-4) broke the Falcons' (3-4-1) three-game home win streak. In all, Seattlle Pacific has won eight of its last 11 contests at Interbay dating back to 2001. Two of those losses were to the Redhawks. SPU travels to Western for its next match. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 PM, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 28).
