DAVIS, Calif. (Sept. 14) -- Down one man,
Seattle Pacific University rallied to tie UC Davis only to see the
10th-ranked Aggies score a late goal for a 2-1 men's soccer
victory Saturday as the Falcons wrapped-up a five-game road trip.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Derrick
Thomas, who also assisted on the game's first goal, scored
directly from a corner kick as SPU goalie James Ward slipped and
fell.
Seattle Pacific (3-2-0) played the final 28
minutes with only 10 men. Defender Mike Pardini was ejected after
receiving his second yellow card for a foul.
Still, despite playing shorthanded, the Falcons
equalized two minutes later. Brent Egbert (Jr., Bellingham, Wa.)
stripped the ball from a defender and tied the score with his
first goal of the season at 63:57.
Grant Falco (Sr., Veradale, Wa.) nearly put SPU
ahead but after beating an Aggie player, he chipped the ball just
over the crossbar from 15 yards.
Jesse Swonetz of UC Davis (4-1-1) had opened
the scoring in the 30th minute after an SPU defender turned over
the ball just outside the box.
"We played decent, but not very
smart," said SPU Coach Cliff McCrath, whose team plays its
home opener Monday at 2 p.m. against Notre Dame de Namur.
Pardini will miss that game, serving a
mandatory suspension as a result of his expulsion.
