Smith Scores Again As SPU Men Thrash 'Jacks
September 11, 2002

ARCATA, Calif. (Sept. 11) -- David Smith scored his fifth goal of the season and the Seattle Pacific University defense posted its third shutout in four games in a 6-0 thrashing of Humboldt State in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Wednesday.

Tom Funk (Fr., Orland Park, Il.) finished with a goal and an assist for the Falcons, who moved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in GNAC play. They wrap-up a five-game road trip Saturday at 10th-ranked UC Davis.

Cory Janzen (Sr., Langley, BC/Lynden Christian), Michael Schefter (Jr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley), Jeremy Yerkes (So., Gresham, Or.) and Grant Falco (Sr., Veradale, Wa.) also tallied goals, with the latter three and Funk getting their second of the season. Humboldt State (0-1-0/1-5-0) has yet to score a goal against Seattle Pacific in six meetings.

Smith (So., Corvallis, Or.) put SPU ahead 2-0 in the 27th minute, finishing a quick combination pass from Funk and scoring from 8 yards. Schefter's 18-yard drive pushed the lead to three goals 1 minute, 55 seconds before halftime.

Two of the Falcons' goals were a result of pressure on defenders when the Lumberjacks were bringing the ball out of their own end. Janzen blocked a clearance and converted a 1-on-1 with HSU goalie Jeff Wallace at 4:44, and Falco intercepted another pass for the fifth goal.

"We kept the ball moving and our high pressure offense-to-defense paid dividends," said SPU Coach Cliff McCrath, who earned his 533rd career victory.

He needs 11 more to become college soccer's all-time leader.

SPU allowed only two Humboldt shots and goalie James Ward (So., Salem, Or.) was required to make only one save in combining with Adrian Cravalho (Sr., Mililani, Hi.) for the shutout. The offense generated 15 shots--12 on goal--and 13 corner kicks. The Falcons own a goal differential of 13-0 in conference play.

In observance of the one-year anniversary of the attacks on America, players from both teams went hand-in-hand to the center circle and, along with the officials, surrounded the color guard during the playing of the national anthem.
