SEATTLE, Wa. (Sept. 10)-Shannon Lovejoy netted
a pair of goals and Megan Leinhard scored once to lead Seattle
Pacific University to victory over Whitworth College 3-1, in a
women's non-conference soccer match Tuesday evening at Interbay
Stadium.
The victory marks the Falcons' first win of
2002 and sixth win at home, historically. Women's soccer was
introduced at Seattle Pacific as a varsity sport in 2001. SPU has
lost but two matches on its home turf.
Lovejoy's (Fr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep.)
initial strike came from the foot of Jessica Henson (So., Spokane,
Wa./University). Henson crossed the ball from the left corner of
the field to Lovejoy. The freshman midfielder fired a left-footed
rocket past Whitworth keeper Jenn Miller to the left post (38:37).
Henson gathered in her second assist of the
night at 41:12. The sophomore midfielder unleashed a shot on goal
from the left wing. Miller was able to save Henson's volley but
could not stymie Leinhard's (Fr., Everett, Wa./Cascade) follow.
The freshman drilled the ball into the back of Whitworth's net
from 10 yards out.
At 77:48, Heather Sale put Whitworth on the
board as she gathered in a loose ball near the 18 yard line and
put the ball at the left post, past SPU keeper Erin Pierce.
However, just a minute and a half later, the Falcons countered.
Michelle Sanders (So., Centralia, Wa.) lofted a left-side corner
kick right to the head of Lovejoy, who butted the ball to the
right post from eight yards out amidst much traffic in the penalty
box.
Seattle Pacific heads to Monmouth for its next
match on Saturday afternoon. The Great Northwest Athletic
Conference contest begins at 12:00. The Falcons return to Seattle
for a three game homestand beginning September 16, with Notre Dame
de Namur.
