BELLINGHAM, WA. (Sept. 7) -- Middle hitter
Monica Herrera (Jr., Lima, Peru/Mercy College) recorded a
season-high 19 kills, 16 digs and three service aces to lead
Seattle Pacific University to victory over Cal State Stanislaus,
30-22, 30-21, 29-31, 32-30, at the Western Washington University
Invitational Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Saturday's victory marked the first win in
seven tries for the Falcons (0-0, 1-6) who wrapped up one of the
nation's toughest preseason schedules at the WWU tourney.
SPU recorded 92 digs and eight blocks, compared
to just 57 and five for Stanislaus (5-4).
Chelsey Myers (Fr., Minden, Nevada/Douglas HS)
and Andrea Pennington (Jr., Bellingham/Whatcom CC) rounded out the
SPU hitters in double figures with 15 and 13 kills, respectively.
Katy Higgins (Jr., Kirkland/Redmond HS) led the Falcons with 48
assists and 19 digs.
Herrera was named to the All-Tournament Team
after finishing the three-match tourney with 41 kills and leading
the Falcons to a 1-2 finish.
The Falcons begin their conference schedule
this Saturday, Sept. 14, with a match against top-ranked Western
Washington at Brougham Pavilion. The match begins at 7 p.m.
