Falcons Swept Twice at WWU Tourney, Still Winless
September 6, 2002

BELLINGHAM, WA. (Sept. 6) - Monica Herrera (Jr., Lima, Peru/Mercy College) slammed a season-high 17 kills and recorded a .250 hitting percentage as the Seattle Pacific University volleyball team was swept 3-0 by UC Davis, 30-27, 30-27, 30-21, Friday morning at the Western Washington University Invitational in Bellingham. In afternoon action, SPU fell to No.7-ranked BYU Hawaii 30-15, 30-17, 30-20.

The Falcons (0-0, 0-6) were competitive in the first two games against the Aggies (0-0, 4-1) as neither team led by more than three points. Herrera recorded just eight errors on 36 attack attempts to lead the SPU-offensive attack. Andrea Pennington (Jr., Bellingham/Whatcom CC) chipped in with 12 kills in her hometown debut and Chelsey Myers (Fr., Minden, Nevada/Douglas HS) added 10 kills.

As a team, the Falcons hit .166 for their best hitting percentage of the season. Defensively, Pennington and Carri Colvin (Sr., Vancouver, Wa./Prairie HS) each recorded 12 digs to lead the SPU back line.

SPU struggled at the service line against the Aggies, however, with 15 service errors and just three aces. The Falcons also stumbled at the net where they earned just two team blocks against.

In the afternoon finale for the Falcons, nationally- ranked BYU Hawaii (0-0, 5-0) ran away with a convincing 3-0 sweep in just over an hour. Seasider middle blocker Lin Chun Yi had a .750 attack percentage with a match- high 16 kills in 20 attempts and just one error to lead BYU. As a team, the Seasiders garnered a .324 attack mark.

The Falcons, on the other hand, struggled on the attack, recording a minus .019 hitting percentage. Not a single SPU attacker reached double-figures in kills, while Pennington led the Falcons with eight. Higgins led the Falcons with 12 digs and 20 assists.

The Falcons play their last match of the WWU tournament tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. against Cal State Stanislaus.
