SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 4) -- Sophomore striker
David Smith scored a pair of goals to lift Seattle Pacific
University to a 2-0 win over San Francisco State in a
nonconference men's soccer game Wednesday at Cox Stadium.
Smith (So., Corvallis, Or.), who now has four
goals in the first two games, staked the Falcons (2-0-0) to an
early lead, finishing a Grant Falco (Sr., Veradale,
Wa./University) through pass with his left foot from 12 yards in
the fifth minute.
After goalie James Ward weathered a late
first-half flurry of shots by the Gators (1-2-0), SPU got another
goal from Smith at 54:09. He headed in a free kick from Mike
Pardini (Sr., Pasco, Wa.) from 6 yards. Smith, after missing the
first six matches of his freshman season, has scored 10 goals in
15 career games.
Ward (So., Salem, Or.) made five saves to earn
his first shutout of the year and the team's second. Seattle
Pacific finished with a 17-14 edge in shots and 6-0 in corner
kicks.
Starting defender David Selby was carried off
the field with 15 minutes remaining with an apparent ankle injury.
The Falcons played without midfielder Ross Vaillancourt, still
recovering from an injury.
SPU, in the midst of a five-game road trip to
open the season, visits 25th-ranked Sonoma State Saturday before
resuming Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Sept. 11 at
Humboldt State.
