NAMPA, Id. (Aug. 30) -- David Smith's second
goal helped break open the game early in the second half as
Seattle Pacific University began its men's soccer season with a
7-0 win over Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic
Conference match Friday at Finkbeiner Recreation Center.
The Falcons (1-0-0), despite dominating play
throughout, led only 2-0 at halftime but erupted for four goals in
a span of 27 minutes to put away the Crusaders (0-1-0). Tom Funk
(Fr., Orland Park, Il.) came off the bench for a goal and an
assist. Michael Brkich (So., Vancouver, BC), Grant Falco (Sr.,
Veradale, Wa./University), James Ward (So., Salem, Or.) and
Michael Schefter (Jr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) supplied the rest
of the offense.
Smith (So., Corvallis, Or.) opened the scoring
just eight minutes after the kickoff, stroking a cross from Mike
Pardini (Sr., Pasco, Wa.) past NNU keeper Erik Gamble. Brkich made
it 2-0 in the 28th minute but wasn't until Smith's header from a
ball served in by Jeremy Yerkes (So., Gresham, Or.), in the 61st
minute, that Seattle Pacific went beyond reach.
SPU finished with a 28-1 advantage in shots and
7-0 in corner kicks. Ward, after playing 60 uneventful minutes in
goal, went upfield to score his fourth career goal with 12 minutes
left. Adrian Cravalho (Sr., Mililani, Hi.) finished at keeper and
was credited with one save.
All 21 available players saw action for the
Falcons. Projected starting midfielder Ross Vaillancourt (Fr.,
Bedford, NH) was held out with an injury.
Wednesday afternoon Seattle Pacific visits San
Francisco State, the second of five consecutive road games to open
the season.
