SEATTLE (Aug. 20) - Monica Herrera, an
all-conference and all-region selection while playing for national
power Mercy College (NY), has transferred to Seattle Pacific
University to play volleyball this fall.
Herrera, a 6-foot-1 native of Lima, Peru, led
NCAA Division II in services aces per game last season, averaging
1.65. She also was among the leaders in kills average at 4.65 and
her attacking percentage was .302. Herrera has two years of
remaining eligibility.
Mercy, located in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., went 34-2,
won the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference and advanced to
the NCAA quarterfinal round for the first time in 2001.
Seattle Pacific qualified for the NCAA
tournament for the second year in a row last season, finishing
20-8 under second-year coach Kellie Ryan. The Falcons lost four
starters from that team.
Preseason training began Aug. 11 and Herrera
joined the sessions Tuesday. The season begins Aug. 30-31 in San
Bernardino, Ca., at the Coyote Invitational. |
