Seven SPU Rowers Are National Scholar-Athletes

SEATTLE (June 11) ­ Seven members of the Seattle Pacific University women¹s crew, including four members of the varsity lightweight four which took third nationally, have earned national scholar-athlete awards from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.

Named to the Division II team were Elyse Cansler (So., Longview, Wa./R.A. Long), Erin Cox (So., Olympia, Wa./Black Hills), Joanna Hodgkiss (So., Tacoma, Wa./Puyallup), Andrea Martineau (So., Superior, Mt.), Julie Vieselmeyer (Jr., Coeur d¹Alene, Id./Lake City), Trisha Sawatzky (Sr., Federal Way, Wa./Decatur) and Trish Weber (So., Selah, Wa.). To be eligible, a rower or coxswain must have a 3.5 or higher grade point average and be participating in the sport for at least a second year.

Cansler (3.71, sociology major), Cox (3.62, nutrition science), Hodgkiss (3.78, business administration) and Vieselmeyer (3.69, psychology/music) were in the Falcons¹ boat which won the regional championship and took the bronze medal at the Dad Vail Regatta last month. Sawatzky (3.79, physics) comprised one-half of the varsity pair which went undefeated en route to a national crown. Martineau (3.81, biology) and Weber (3.62, nursing) each rowed in the varsity four which claimed a conference title.
