PHILADELPHIA (May 11) -- Seattle Pacific
University claimed national championships in both the women's
varsity pair and novice four with both crews finishing their
seasons unbeaten at the 64th annual Dad Vail Regatta on the
Schuykill River Saturday.
Winning for the 12th time in as many outings,
the SPU novice four scored nearly two-length victory over
second-place Georgia in 7 minutes, 24.7 seconds. The Bulldogs were
timed in 7:31.4. Earlier in the day, the Falcons had won their
semifinal heat.
The novice four lineup was stroke Sarah Zorn,
Shannon Buehler, Heidi Visser; bow Andi Martineau and coxswain
Emily Thomas.
In the women's pair, Kimberly Tschetter and
Trisha Sawatzky and rowed to a 10-second win over Bucknell in
8:08.1. They finished the season 7-0.
That gave Seattle Pacific its fourth national
title in the last three seasons. The women's varsity four had won
crowns in 2000 and '01. Tschetter was a member of the varsity four
a year ago.
Taking a bronze was the SPU lightweight four.
Georgia was first in 7:25.3, followed by Carnegie Mellon in 7:49.3
and SPU in 7:49.5. The lineup was stroke Andrea Reichert, Julie
Vieselmeyer, Elyse Cansler, bow Erin Cox and cox Joanna Hodgkiss.
