MONMOUTH, Ore. (Apr. 26) -- Stephanie Huffman
coasted to the heptathlon title and, together with Seattle Pacific
University teammates Laura Widman and Leah Wiiest, helped the
Falcons sweep the top three places at the Great Northwest Athletic
Conference multiple-event track & field meet Friday at
McArthur Field.
Huffman (Sr., Brush Prairie, Wa./Prairie), the
runaway leader from the outset, finished with 4867 points for the
seven events. Widman (Jr., Colfax, Wa.), in her first full meet
since recovering from a hamstring strain, took second place and
also surpassed the NCAA Division II qualifying standard with 4658.
Wiiest (Sr., Spokane, Wa./Deer Park) improved her qualifying mark,
finishing third with 4649.
With the sweep, Seattle Pacific will begin next
week's GNAC Championships in Bellingham with 24 points. The
Falcons have won the past two conference titles.
Huffman began the second day by long-jumping 17
feet, 11 1/4 inches and throwing the javelin 132-1, finishing
second among the field in both. She then jogged the 800 meters in
2 minutes, 41.99 seconds.
Widman won the long jump at 18-0 1/2--her best
effort in two years. Wiiest finished with the best 800 (2:22.23).
The rest of the SPU men's and women's team will
be in action Saturday at either the Oregon Invitational or Western
Oregon Open.
