Huffman Moves Up to 4th in Heptathlon with Season-Best Score
April 19, 2002

AZUSA, Calif. (Apr. 19) -- Seattle Pacific University's Stephanie Huffman finished with a season-best heptathlon score of 5005 points to take fourth place in the California Invitational track & field meet Friday.

Huffman (Sr., Brush Prairie, Wa./Prairie) moved up two places during the second day of the seven-event competition, which was won by Idaho State's Jackie Poulson with 5218 points. Huffman began with a long jump of 18 feet, 10 3/4 inches and a javelin throw of 134-2. She ran the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 36.97 seconds.

Her total score was an improvement of 72 points over her initial qualifying score last month, and it was the No. 4 mark in the nation. It also was Huffman's best outing since scoring 5121 to take second place at the 1999 NCAA Division II Championships. The Falcons' Leah Wiiest (Sr., Spokane, Wa./Deer Park) finished 15th with 4400 points. She had scored 4601 earlier in the season. Wiiest's best marks were a long jump of 17-6 1/2 and a PR of 2:23.54 in the 800.

Teammates Laura Widman (Jr., Colfax, Wa.) was 17th with 4339 and Jennifer Pyeatt (So., Graham, Wa./Bethel) was 21st with 4086.

The rest of the SPU track & field team competes at the Spike Arlt Invitational Saturday in Ellensburg.
