CHENEY, Wash. (Apr. 12) -- Seattle Pacific
University's Dionna Anderson heaved the shot the third-longest
distance in school history and in the long jump teammate Stephanie
Huffman earned her third provisional qualifying mark at the 31st
annual Pelluer Invitational track & field meet Friday night at
Woodward Field.
Anderson (Sr., Lynnwood, Wa./Edmonds-Woodway)
joined 800-meter runner Rachel Ross (Sr., Kennewick, Wa.) and 1500
racer Nathanael Castle (Sr., Gooding, Id.) as winners for the
Falcons.
A career-best throw by more than 2 feet,
Anderson sent the shot 46 feet, 6 1/4 inches to win the
competition convincingly. It was her second victory in as many
weeks and it was the No. 5 mark in NCAA Division II this season.
No Falcon thrower had broken 46 feet since 1978.
Huffman (Sr., Brush Prairie, Wa./Prairie),
already an NCAA qualifier in the javelin and heptathlon, leaped
18-11 1/4 to finish second in the long jump. It was a PR by 6
inches and the No. 8 qualifying mark in Div. II. Montana's Renee
Dunn set a meet and stadium record, taking first at 20-3.
Ross ran to her fourth 800 triumph in as many
races this spring, winning comfortably in 2 minutes, 13.12
seconds. Sarah Kraybill (Jr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard) of SPU was
second, just missing the provisional standard with a time of
2:14.36. Ross and Kraybill also ran in Seattle Pacific's
first-place 4 x 400 relay (3:54.43).
Castle coasted to his second straight win in
the 1500, finishing in 3:56.10--more than 5 seconds ahead of the
runner-up. He also figured in the 4 x 400 relay which took third
place yet had its best time in two years--3:21.49.
Jawea Harder (Sr., Port Townsend, Wa.) placed a
close second in the women's 400 hurdles (1:02.76; Amber Larsen won
in 1:02.72) while Jennifer Pyeatt (So., Graham, Wa./Bethel) let
loose with a PR shot put of 41-5 1/4 to finish fourth.
