SPU Gymnasts Finish in Fourth Place at USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships

Springfield, Mass (April 12) The Seattle Pacific University gymnastics team finished in fourth place in the finals of the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships held in Springfield, Mass. Air Force won the title for the second year in a row, finishing with a 194.150.

Texas Women's University, which finished the preliminary round of competition yesterday in third place, moved up a notch to end the championships in second place with a score of 192.950. Third place went to UC Davis, which scored a 192.800. Seattle came in fourth with a 192.200.

Seattle had to do without Elisabeth Kingsley (Fr., Harrison, Ga.) on her usual two events, vault and floor, as she suffered an injury in the prelim competition. The Falcons still managed to put in a good showing on vault, where senior Alison Siegel-McAfee (Sr., Oakland, Ca./Redwood Christian), who earned all-American honors last night on this event, hit her vault for a score of 9.775. Another all-American from this season, Corrie McDaniel (Fr., Lawrence, Ks./Lawrence), earned a new career high with a score of 9.625.

Bars was another strong event for the Falcons. Led by McDaniel, who was the highest scoring teammate with a 9.70, the team amassed a total of 48.100, which is the best bar score since mid-February. Each of the five counting scores for the Falcons was above the 9.500 mark, including Jennifer Christman (So., Fairfield, Ca./Benicia) who put in a top notch performance, swinging to a 9.675.

Siegel-McAfee, seeking redemption after falling off beam in last night's competition, found that and more as she posted a score of 9.850 which was the highest beam score of the night. Annastasia Ahr (So., Chelan, Wa./Blessed Hope Academy) and her score of 9.525 was not too far behind, nor was Rachael Anderson (Jr., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) who earned a 9.50

The Falcon's highest scoring event of the night was floor, where each of the counting scores was at or above the 9.70 mark. Their total of 48.800 was one of the highest event totals of the season. Siegel-McAfee and McDaniel led the team, as they finished with a 9.875 and 9.800 respectively. Courtney Stump (Sr., Poulsbo, Wa./Charles Wright) was the next highest scoring Falcon with a score of 9.725.

Individual finals begin Saturday at 7 p.m. EST.
