Unbeaten streaks on line. Unbeatable so
far this spring, the Seattle Pacific University women's crews test
themselves against the best in the Northwest Saturday (Apr. 6) at
the Husky Invitational in the Montlake Cut. The entire fleet of
SPU women's boats is undefeated through three regattas while the
men's lightweight four has done likewise. Next week the Falcons
row in Salem, Ore., at the Governor's Cup.
The usual cast and crews. Out along the
starting line in Lake Washington will be boats from Washington,
Oregon, Willamette, Western Washington, Lewis & Clark, Puget
Sound and Seattle University. The SPU light fours are defending
Husky Invitational champions. The women's team will be at full
strength at this regatta for the first time since 1996 as Coach
Keith Jefferson has opted not to send a squad to the San Diego
Crew Classic .
Seven of eight ain't bad. At last
week's Daffodil Cup, the Falcons prevailed in seven of the eight
races in which they participated, including all five women's
entries. SPU defeated Western Washington's split eight by just
over a boat-length in the women's varsity four and the lightweight
four finished ahead of Puget Sound by a similar margin. The novice
four had plenty of open water on Willamette in that race. Neither
the women's varsity nor novice four has lost on American Lake
since March of 2000. For the men, the Seattle Pacific light
four won by a little more than two lengths over Western.

Short strokes. Never before has
the entire women's program emerged unscathed through its first
three regattas. The varsity and light fours, the top two boats,
are almost identical in composition and are stroked by Andrea
Reichert (So., Bloomington, Mn./Jefferson)...Three of the four
oarsmen in the undefeated men's light four, including stroke Mike
Lucero (Sr., Moses Lake, Wa.), have experience in national
championships.

SPU Coaches. A past oarsman, alumnus
and assistant coach, Keith Jefferson has steered Seattle Pacific
University into uncharted waters in national prominence during his
11-year tenure as head coach. Jefferson, 40, became the fifth head
coach at Seattle Pacific University in the fall of 1990, and has
overseen the rise of the Falcons as a regional force in small
college rowing. Both men's and women's boats have proved
competitive at the national level in recent years. The women's
varsity four won back-to-back Avaya Collegiate Championships in
2000 and 2001 after placing third in 1999. The men's four finished
fifth in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association in 1995, the
lightweight four was second at Dad Vail in 2000 and the novice
four third in 2001.
