SAN DIEGO (Mar. 22) -- Stephanie Huffman and
Leah Wiiest, both of Seattle Pacific University, surpassed NCAA
Division II provisional qualifying standards, finishing 1-2 in the
Point Loma Heptathlon competition Friday.
Huffman (Sr., Brush Prairie, Wa./Prairie) won
the meet with a total of 4933 points while Wiiest (Sr., Spokane,
Wa./Deer Park), in her first season of track & field, took
second with 4601.
Huffman took over the lead from Claremont's
Katie Ray following the long jump, the first event of the second
day and fifth overall. Huffman had the meet's top leap--17 feet,
10 1/4 inches--and also won the javelin with a throw of 131-3.
Wiiest passed Ray on the final event, the
800-meter run, with the second-best time overall, 2 minutes 24.63
seconds. Huffman was next, in 2:32.74. Wiiest had long-jumped 17-2
and thrown the javelin 108-10. Ray, the first-day leader, finished
third overall with 4568 points.
A dozen SPU men and women will compete at the
Aztec Invitational Saturday at San Diego State.
