SAN BERNARDINO -- Sophomore Fred Hooks scored
33 points and collected 13 rebounds Friday night to carry his
Humboldt State University Lumberjacks into the NCAA Division II
West Regional title game, outscoring Seattle Pacific University,
89-82 before 1,367 fans.
Humboldt State (25-3) built a 41-32 halftime
lead but the Falcons rallied in the closing minutes to cut the
margin to just five points, 79-74, with 1:50 remaining, but
Humboldt responded on a layup by Hooks and four free throws by
Mark White for an 88-79 advantage with less than a minute to play.
Eric Sandrin led Seattle Pacific with 23 points
and 10 rebounds. Four other Falcons scored in double figures --
Maurice Cato, Yusef Aziz, Brannon Stone and Nick Johnson.
Hooks was backed up by HSU teammate Austin
Nichols with 27 points and seven rebounds. Nichols sank 15 of 17
free throws.
The Lumberjacks will face the winner of the
other semifinal between Cal State Bakersfield (24-4) and Cal State
San Bernardino (26-1) in Coussoulis Arena on the Cal State campus.
Seattle Pacific, co-champs of the Great
Northwest Conference with Humboldt State and Western Washington,
ends its season at 24-5. WWU was not selected for the post-season. |
