SEATTLE (Feb. 28) -- Robert Day poured in 26
points as Western Oregon held on to upset 9th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University 77-74, snapping the Falcons home winning streak
at 12 games Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.
Despite the loss, Seattle Pacific (22-4, 14-3
GNAC) can still earn a share of the Great Northwest Athletic
Conference championship by beating Humboldt State in the final
game of the regular season Saturday night at 7. The 5th-ranked
Lumberjacks fell to Western Washington, 76-66, in Bellingham.
Nick Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington,
Wa./Burlington-Edison) pumped in 23 of his 25 points in the second
half as the Falcons erased a 19-point deficit in just over eight
minutes. A trey by Johnson gave SPU its only lead of the second
half at 44-43, capping a 25-5 burst.
However Day restored the Wolves lead with a
3-pointer and a tip by Drew Summers made it 54-49 with 7:49
remaining. After another trey by Jay Glover and a put-back by Luke
Gambee, the lead reached 61-53. Seattle Pacific got no closer than
three until the final 14 seconds and never had a chance to shoot
for the tie or lead.
Glover finished with 18 points and nine
rebounds for Western Oregon, which had lost seven of its last
eight meetings with SPU, including a 73-57 setback in Monmouth
Jan. 26. The Wolves out-rebounded SPU 43-34 as Summers and Yuri
Whyms also collected seven boards each.
Day connected on 4-5 treys and was 9-16
overall. Western Oregon made 6-13 treys and converted 21-23 free
throws.
Yusef Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle,
Wa./Foster-Higline CC) adde 12 points and Gene Woodard (Jr., 6-3,
Edmonds, Wa./O'Dea) for the Falcons shot a season-low 38.5 percent
(25-65) from the field. Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.)
pulled down 11 rebounds, passed for eight assists and blocked five
shots to lead all players.
Johnson made seven of 10 shots in the second
half and was 8-14 overall, including 3-6 3-pointers.
Western Oregon's trapping zone held the Falcons
to just 19 first-half points--six fewer than any previous game.
Meanwhile the Wolves were hitting 50 percent at their end. Robert
Day, despite being faced with a box-and-one, hit five of seven
field goals and scored 16 points.
It was Day who led a 19-2 charge for a 34-17
advantage with 3:22 left in the opening half. The gap grew to 19
on a layup by Glover to open the second half.
