SPU Women Improve in West, Men Remain 4th
February 27, 2002

SEATTLE (Feb. 27) -- Seattle Pacific University finds its women's basketball team in the precarious position of holding the sixth and final regional playoff spot going into Saturday's game with Central Washington.

The Falcons moved up one spot, exchanging places with Sonoma State at No. 6. Central is No. 5. Only the top six teams will receive an NCAA Division II tournament bid when the bracket is unveiled Sunday night. The Falcons are ranked No. 7 nationally this week.

Cal Poly Pomona remains No. 1 in the West, followed by Cal State Bakersfield, Western Washington and Montana State Billings.

In the men's regional rankings, SPU remains No. 4 going into its final two regular season games, Thursday against Western Oregon and Saturday versus Humboldt State. The top two seeds receive first-round byes.

Cal State San Bernardino is again No. 1, Humboldt State No. 2 and Cal State Bakersfield No. 3. Hawaii Pacific, Montana State Billings and Western Washington round out the top seven, which remained unchanged.
