Hughes Leads No. 11 Falcons Past Western Oregon in Double Overtime
February 23, 2002

MONMOUTH, ORE. (Feb. 23) -- A season-high 22 points and career-best 10 rebounds by Kerie Hughes lifted the 11th-ranked Seattle Pacific University women's basketball team (13-4, 21-5) over Western Oregon 94-80 in double overtime in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday night in Monmouth, Ore.

The Falcons (13-4, 21-5), winners of seven of their last eight games, outscored the Wolves (15-10, 8-8) 23-9 in the second overtime to pullout the victory. The Falcons host Central Washington on March 2 at Brougham Pavilion. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

SPU went on a 9-0 run to begin the second overtime and did not allow a WOU basket until the 1:08 mark. Emily Faurholt (Fr., 5-11, Kennewick, Wa./Kennewick) converted three field-goals and Hughes (Jr., 5-6, Mt. Vernon, Wa./Mt. Vernon) was a perfect six-for-six from the free-throw line to lead the Falcons in the second and decisive overtime period with six points apiece.

The Wolves rallied back after trailing the Falcons 17-5 in the first half to pull to within a basket at halftime. WOU captured the lead in the second half and led by as many seven points. The Falcons tied the game with 1:10 to play and gained a two-point advantage on a pair of free-throws by Hughes with 20 seconds remaining. Becky Gregory drove the lane and scooped a shot off the glass with 2.7 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The SPU offense went cold in the first overtime and did not score until 2:30 into the period. More clutch free-throw shooting by Hughes gave the Falcons a single-point advantage with under a minute left. The Wolves Gregory converted one of two free-throws with 2.6 seconds remaining to force a second overtime.

The Falcons shot a season-worst .329 percent from the floor. SPU was 26-for-79 overall and 7-for-21 from three-point range. The Falcons won the battle on the glass with a season-high rebounds.

The Falcons were without starting center Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa./Washington State) for much of the game as she sprained her ankle in the first half. She played just 23 minutes and scored four points.
