Stone, Sandrin Help Falcons Clinch First Alaska Sweep Since 1991
February 23, 2002

FAIRBANKS, Ak. (Feb. 23) -- Brannon Stone scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half and Eric Sandrin added 17 as 12th-ranked Seattle Pacific University stormed past Alaska Fairbanks 97-62 for its first Alaska road series sweep in 11 years Saturday at the Patty Center.

The victory, the Falcons' seventh in the last eight games, keeps them in contention for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship and virtually assures an NCAA Division II tournament berth. Seattle Pacific (14-2, 22-3) trails Humboldt State by one game but hosts the 5ht-ranked Lumberjacks in the season finale Saturday.

Sandrin (Sr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) scored the first six of 12 unanswered points which put SPU ahead 28-12. Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) connected on four straight jumpers, including two from outside the 3-point arc, in the final three minutes of the half, after which the Falcons led 47-25.

Seattle Pacific shot a season-high 62 percent from the field (36-58), with Stone going 9-11 (4-5 treys) and Sandrin 7-8. The Falcons made 8-15 3-pointers and committed just five turnovers. None of the starters played more than 27 minutes.

Alaska Fairbanks (1-15, 3-22) trailed by as many as 39 in the second half in losing its seventh in a row. The Nanooks were led by the 20 points and nine rebounds of forward John Early. They hit just 36 percent of their field goals and turned over the ball 16 times.

SPU, which defeated Alaska Anchorage 95-86 in overtime Thursday, finished the road portion of its schedule 10-2. It has won 12 straight at home.

Stone also contributed five assists and three steals. Yusef Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) added 13 points and Nick Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington, Wa./Burlington-Edison) 10. Reserves Jesse Keely (Jr., 6-7, Fircrest, Wa./Bellarmine) and Aaron Bellessa (Jr., 6-2, Federal Way, Wa./Decatur) had season-highs of nine and eight points, respectively.

SPU plays its final two regular season games at home, beginning Thursday against Western Oregon at 7.
