Peterson Leads Sacramento State to Women's Gymnastics Victory
February 22, 2002

Seattle (Feb. 22)- A women's gymnastics meet between Seattle Pacific University and California State University Sacramento at Brougham Pavilion completed back-to-back meetings between the teams. Despite the efforts of Alison Siegel-McAfee who finished first on the vault and 3rd overall, the Falcons were unable to repeat last's weeks win and were defeated by the Hornets by a score of 194.475 to 192.050. The Falcons still lead the series 24-17.

The night was full of record-breaking scores. The Falcons set new scoring records for the 2002 season on two events, vault (47.650) and floor (48.925) as well as the four-event total (192.050). Siegel-McAfee tied the current home team record on floor with a score of 9.900, only to be outdone by her freshman teammate, Corrie McDaniel (Fr., Lawrence, Ks.) who broke the record with a nearly flawless routine and a score of 9.925.

The Falcons began the evening strong on vault, with four gymnasts either bettering or tying their season high scores. Among those competitors was Siegel-McAfee (Sr., Oakland, Ca.), who won the event with a 9.750.

Sacramento took the next five places on that event, led by Stefanie Aeder.

Jennifer Christman (So., Fairfield, Ca.) and Kari Kelly (Fr., Yakima, Wa.) were SPU's top finishers on the bars with identical scores of 9.725, which marked a new career-high for Kelly. Sacramento took the top three places, including Toni Peterson who won the event with a 9.825 and eventually the all-around competition.

Siegel McAfee and McDaniel finished 2nd and 3rd respectively on beam, with scores of 9.825 and 9.800, which were season high scores for each gymnast. Nirvana Zaher of Sacramento took first place on the event, with a near perfect routine which scored 9.925.

SPU heads across town to Washington for a three-way meet involving UCLA on March 1.
