ARCATA, CALIF. (Feb. 21) -- A pair of
double-doubles from Kristin Poe and Kelley Berglund sparked the
11th- ranked Seattle Pacific University women's basketball team in
a 81-69 victory over Humboldt State in a Great Northwest Athletic
Conference game Thursday night in Arcata, Calif.
The Falcons (12-4, 20-5), winners of six of
their last seven games, put together a 20-11 run at the beginning
of the second half to build what would be an insurmountable
deficit for the Jacks (5-10, 7-16). Tonight's victory marked the
third straight 20-win season and the fifth in the last six seasons
for the Falcons. The Falcons play Western Oregon in Monmouth,
Ore., on Saturday night.
SPU trailed Humboldt by as many as eight points
in the first half before taking over the lead for good at the
12:14 mark. The Jacks pulled to within eight of the Falcons with
just over a minute remaining in the game before six straight free
throws by Kerie Hughes (Jr., 5-6, Mt. Vernon, Wa./Mt. Vernon)
sealed the victory.
The Falcons attempted 29 free throws, the
fourth most this season, and converted 21 for a 76 percent from
the charity stripe. SPU outrebounded HSU 45-35, including 20
offensive rebounds, the third most this season.
Berglund's (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles,
Wa./Washington State) 20-point, 11-rebound double-double marks her
team-high seventh of the season, and her fourth in the last six
games. Poe (So., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) scored 10 points and
grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the
season. Hughes and Stephanie Urrutia (Jr., 5-9, Sunnyside,
Wa./Sunnyside) also reached double-figures with 15 and 14 points,
respectively.
