Aziz Sparks No. 12 SPU Men to Overtime Wiu at Anchorage
February 21, 2002

SEATTLE (Feb. 21) -- Yusef Aziz scored eight of his season-high 26 points in overtime as 12th-ranked Seattle Pacific University pulled away to beat Alaska Anchorage 95-86 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game Thursday night at the UAA Sports Center.

Eric Sandrin (Sr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) added 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Falcons (13-2, 21-3), who trailed much of regulation but then hit all six of their field goals and 10 of 11 free throws in the extra period. It was Seattle Pacific's first win at Anchorage in its last nine trips since 1991 and its third in 21 tries.

Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) made the second of two free throws to force the overtime with 1 minute, 43 seconds left in the second period. He then muscled inside for six of his team's first 12 points in overtime. A 3-pointer by Maurice Cato (Jr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.) gave SPU the lead for good and ignited a 12-3 run for an 89-81 advantage with 48 seconds to go.

Cato and Nick Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington, Wa/Burlington-Edison), who hit all 11 of his freethrows, finished with 17 points apiece. Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.), after missing his first nine shots from the field, hit two treys in OT. The Seawolves (8-7, 8-16) got 23 points and 12 boards from Peter Bullock, 22 points from Cody Gallatin and 21 from Mark Drake. Anchoarge led by as much as nine in the first half and 55-47 with 15:17 left in regulation.

A 15-2 charge by the Falcons, including two three-point plays by Aziz, put them in front, 62-57. Aziz finished 10-17 from the floor and had seven rebounds.

Anchorage hit 48 percent from the field, including 12-20 treys,, but was out-rebounded 43-25. Sandrin snared eight balls off the offensive glass, added five assists and had two blocked shots.

SPU plays its final road game Saturday afternoon at Alaska Fairbanks and closes out the regular season next by hosting Western Oregon and Humboldt State.
