SEATTLE (Feb. 16) -- Kelley Berglund's
20-point, 16-rebound double-double led the 15th- ranked Seattle
Pacific University women's basketball team to its 19th straight
home victory 80-69 versus Alaska-Anchorage in a Great Northwest
Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (11-4, 19-5), winners of five of
their last six games, shot 61 percent in the first half to go on a
20-6 run over a six-minute stretch against the Seawolves (1-14,
5-19) to build their lead. SPU travels to Humboldt State next
Thursday to play the Jacks at 6 p.m.
SPU trailed the Seawolves for a brief stint in
the first half before transitioning into a zone defense midway
through the half. The zone caused bad Anchorage shots and easy
fast-break points for the Falcons. The Falcons were 19-for-31 in
the first half and shot 50 percent for the game. SPU claimed its
first lead of the game at the 12:53 mark in the first half and
never again trailed the Seawolves. The SPU lead reached its height
at 19 points with nine minutes remaining in the second half.
Berglund's (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles,
Wa./Washington State) 16 boards marks a career-high for the junior
transfer. Emily Faurholt (Fr., 5-11, Kennewick, Wa./Kennewick)
chipped in 14 points, while Stephanie Urrutia (Jr., 5-9,
Sunnyside, Wa./Sunnyside) and Michelle Beaumont (Fr., 5-11,
Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) scored 12 points apiece. Valerie Gustafson
(So., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) rounded out the five SPU
players to reach double figures as she poured in 10. Trisha
Hermanson (Fr., 5-6, Buckley, Wa./White River) handed out a
career-high nine assists, including six in the first half alone.
