SEATTLE (Feb. 14) -- Kelley Berglund's
game-high 21 points led the 15th- ranked Seattle Pacific
University women's basketball team to its 18th straight home
victory with a 88-63 win over Alaska-Fairbanks in a Great
Northwest Athletic Conference game Thursday night at Brougham
Pavilion.
The Falcons (10-4, 18-5), winners of four of
their last five games, avenged an overtime loss to the Nanooks
(6-8, 12-11) on Jan. 12 in Fairbanks. SPU hosts Alaska-Anchorage
this Saturday at 7 p.m.
SPU began a 45-13 run with 2:26 remaining in
the first to blow the game wide open. The Falcons largest lead of
the game, 34 points, came at the 6:50 mark in the second-half.
Five three-pointers in the second half and 54 percent field-goal
shooting built and sustained the margin.
The Falcons pressured the ball heavily, forcing
Fairbanks to shoot 32 percent from the floor. UAF was just
4-for-16 from the three-point line. Kristin Poe (So., 5-8,
Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) and Emily Faurholt (Fr., 5-11, Kennewick,
Wa./Kennewick) recorded 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively, to lead
a decisive 52-34 rebounding edge over the Nanooks.
Michelle Beaumont (Fr., 5-11, Bellingham,
Wa./Sehome) and Kerie Hughes (Jr., 5-6, Mt. Vernon, Wa./Mt.
Vernon) each joined Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles,
Wa./Washington State) in double-figures with 15 and 14 points,
respectively. Hughes was a perfect six-for-six from the floor,
including one three-pointer, and sank one free-throw. Berglund
shot 8-for-14 from the floor and five-for-six from the charity
stripe.
