Second-Half Rally Lifts No. 12 Falcons Women over Seattle U.
February 9, 2002

SEATTLE (Feb. 9) -- Stephanie Urrutia (Jr., 5-9, Sunnyside, Wa./Sunnyside) scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Seattle Pacific University women's basketball past cross-town rival Seattle University 69-60 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at the Connolly Center. SPU is currently ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division II ESPN/USA Today national poll and No. 6 in the West Region.

The Falcons (9-4, 17-5) fell behind the Redhawks (6-6, 11-10) 15-6 in the first seven minutes of the game on a pair of three-pointers by point guard Marissa Young. SPU responded with a 22-6 run in the next ten minutes to claim their largest lead of the half at seven. Two more three-point bombs, this time by Leah Welton, gave the Redhawks a one-point advantage heading into halftime.

Urrutia led a spirited second-half Falcon comeback with a perfect six-for-six shooting performance, including two three-pointers for 17 points in just 18 minutes of play. The Falcons blew the game open with 13 unanswered points in the middle of the second half capped by a pair of jumpers by Kristin Poe (So., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) with just under 10 minutes remaining.

A three-pointer by Mariko Trias trimmed the SPU lead to seven at the 7:31 mark, but that is as close as the Redhawks would come for the remainder of the contest.

Kelley Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa./Washington State) and Poe each recorded double-doubles in scoring and rebounding to help lead the Falcons alongside Urrutia. Berglund finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Poe put up 16 and 11.

Emily Faurholt (Fr., 5-11, Kennewick, Wa./Kennewick) also reached double-figures with 10 points. Kerie Hughes (Jr., 5-6, Mt. Vernon, Wa./Mt. Vernon) handed out five assists and snared a pair of steals.

Cal-jean Lloyd paced the Redhawks with 18 points.

The Falcons return home to Brougham Pavilion next Thursday, Feb. 14 to host Alaska-Fairbanks. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
