No. 12 Falcons Stumble at No. 15 Western Washington
February 7, 2002

BELLINGHAM (Feb. 7) -- Kelley Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa./Washington State) led five teammates in double-figures with 21 points but it was not enough as the Seattle Pacific University women's basketball fell to Western Washington 102-87 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup Thursday at Sam Carver Gymnasium in Bellingham.

SPU is currently ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division II ESPN/USA Today national poll, while WWU is ranked No. 15. SPU is No. 6 in the West Region with WWU at No. 2.

From the beginning, it was apparent that the Falcons (8-4, 16-5) were at the Vikings (11-1, 18-3) mercy at home where they have now won 17 straight and 37 of 38 dating back to February 1999. WWU opened the game with a 19-9 run in the first five minutes of action. When the Vikings lead hit 10 at the 15:05 mark in the first half, it never again dropped to single-digits.

The Vikings led by as many as 26 in the first half as the Falcons struggled offensively. SPU recorded 11 first-half turnovers and gave up 11 offensive rebounds to WWU. The Vikings shot 54 percent in the first-half and hit six three-pointers. Three WWU players finished the half in double-figures.

The Vikings lead extended to 30 at the 15:22 mark in the second half before the Falcons mounted a small comeback. SPU narrowed the margin to 13 with more than five minutes remaining but the Vikings held steady and warded off the rally to close out the game with a 15-point victory at home.

Stephanie Urrutia (Jr., 5-9, Sunnyside, Wa./Sunnyside) was not far behind Berglund with 18 points while Michelle Beaumont (Fr., 5-11, Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) chipped in 12 in front of her hometown crowd. Kristin Poe (So., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) and Kerie Hughes (Jr., 5-6, Mt. Vernon, Wa./Mt. Vernon) each recorded 10 points. Poe led the Falcons in rebounds with seven.

Susan Rodgers paced the Vikings with 26 points.

The Falcons play cross-town rival Seattle University this Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Connolly Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
