Falcon Defense Stymies Redhawks to Complete Sweep
February 7, 2002

SEATTLE (Feb. 7) -- Brannon Stone and Maurice Cato each scored 16 points and No. 8-ranked Seattle Pacific University allowed under 60 points for the fourth consecutive game, beating Seattle University 72-46 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference basketball game Thursday night at Connolly Center.

Yusef Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) scored nine of his 13 points during a momentum-shifting run late in the first half as the Falcons (11-1, 19-2) completed a three-game sweep of the Redhawks this season and extended their win steak in the series to 12 in a row, dating back to 1995. Seattle U. (2-11, 3-19) dropped its sixth straight.

SPU held Seattle U. scoreless for two 5-minute stretches of the second period and allowed only 16 points after intermission to come within one victory of its fourth straight 20-win season. The four straight games--all wins--with opponents scoring under 60 marks the first such occurrence for the Falcons since the advent of the shot clock. The 46 points equaled the least allowed in the last four seasons.

After the Redhawks got off to a strong start behind Bryan Peterson to take a 25-17 lead, Seattle Pacific responded with an 11-0 run and, later, a 16-0 charge which included the first 4:28 of the second half. At that point the Falcons were in control, 44-30, and they drew away from there,

Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) stroked the second of his four 3-pointers to give SPU a 31-30 and Cato (Jr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.) hit one of his four treys shortly before the halftime buzzer for a 36-30 advantage. Both players hit 6-10 from the floor for the game.

Seattle Pacific hit 53 percent for the field, including 58 percent (15-26) in the second period. Seattle U., after making 53 percent in the opening 20 minutes, was just 7-24 in the second half and 40 percent for the game. Behind Eric Sandrin's (Sr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) 11 rebounds, SPU finished with a 32-26 edge on the boards and the Falcons had seven fewer turnovers,12-19.

Peterson paced the Redhawks with 17, 15 of those points coming in the first half.

SPU plays the second of five consecutive road games Saturday night in Nampa, Id., versus Northwest Nazarene.
