Stone's Near Triple Double Sparks SPU to Homecoming Romp
February 2, 2002

SEATTLE (Feb. 2) -- Brannon Stone came within two assists of Seattle Pacific University's first triple-double and finished with a career-high 16 rebounds and 14 points as the 10th-ranked Falcons surged past Central Washington in the second half, winning 84-59 before a capacity crowd of 2,675 at Brougham Pavilion Saturday.

Maurice Cato led the way with 16 points as SPU (10-1, 18-2) won its 14th consecutive homecoming game and remained in a first place tie with Humboldt State atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. Seattle Pacific has won 18 of its last 19 games and 11 straight at home.

Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) scored 11 of his points in the first half and then controlled the defensive boards in the final period, grabbing six misses. He finished with eight assists before leaving the game with three minutes remaining.

A close contest began to be blown open when Seattle Pacific connected on five straight field goals--three of them treys--to go in front, 58-49. Yusef Aziz's wide-open three-pointer from the left side then started a 24-3 run over the next nine minutes. Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) scored 11 of his 13 in the second half.

Seattle Pacific shot 57 percent in the second half and 51 percent (29-57) for the game while Central made just 34 percent (21-62) overall. The Wildcats missed 13 of 14 three-point attempts in the second half. Stone and Aziz each had three treys and SPU was 10-21 outside the arc.

The Wildcats, held to their lowest score of the season and only 23 points in the second half, went over seven minutes without a field goal and trailed by as many as 28.

Terry Thompson led Central with 13 points while Justin Thompson added 11 points and as many rebounds.

It was the Falcons' fifth win over their rivals in the last six meetings. They had won at Ellensburg, 101-100, in double overtime Dec. 6.

Seattle Pacific, after leading by as many as nine, settled for a 39-36 lead at halftime after Terry Thompson's three-quarter-court heave banked in after the buzzer. Stone hit three of the Falcons' five first-period three-pointers while Jordan Lee came off the bench for seven points, hitting all three of his shots.

Seattle Pacific goes on the road for its next five games, beginning Thursday night at Seattle University.
