No. 12 Falcons Blow Past Crusaders, Presnell Earns 300th Career Victory
January 31, 2002

SEATTLE (Jan. 31) -- Kelley Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa./Washington State) scored a team-high 16 points and Kristin Poe (So., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) recorded a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the Seattle Pacific University women's basketball past Northwest Nazarene 74-59 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup Thursday at Brougham Pavilion.

SPU is currently ranked No. 12 in the NCAA Division II ESPN/USA Today national poll and No. 6 in West Region.

Head Coach Gordy Presnell reached the 300-win career milestone with Thursday's victory. He is now 300-120 all-time in his 15th season with the Falcons.

The Falcons (6-3, 15-4) were unable to build a substantial lead over the Crusaders (3-6, 8-9) until the final ten minutes of the first half. Down 21-22 at the 10:31 mark, SPU went on a 10-1 run capped by a jumper by Beaumont with just over six minutes remaining. The Falcons biggest lead of the half at 12 came at 2:48 and at the halftime buzzer. SPU capitalized on 16 first-half SMC turnovers with 15 points and dominated the offensive glass for 11 second-chance points in the first half alone.

The SPU offense sputtered in the second half, hitting 10-of-29 for 35 percent, but still managed to build a game-high 20-point lead at the 9:02 mark. The Falcons defense stole the show by keeping the Crusaders at bay while the offense struggled, holding NNU to just 22 percent shooting in the half.

Emily Faurholt (Fr., 5-11, Kennewick, Wa./Kennewick) and Michelle Beaumont (Fr., 5-11, Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) joined Berglund and Poe in double-figures with 12 points apiece. Kerie Hughes (Jr., 5-6, Mt.. Vernon, Wa./Mt. Vernon) finished with a game-high eight assists while Poe tacked on five steals.

Alyson Kollman paced the Crusaders with 17 points.

The Falcons host Saint Martin's this Saturday, Feb. 2, at Brougham Pavilion. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
