Aziz Propels No. 8 Falcons to 16th Win in Last 17

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 26) -- Yusef Aziz scored 17 of his season-high 25 points in the second half and added seven rebounds as No. 8-ranked Seattle Pacific University won its 16th game of the season, 73-57 over Western Oregon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference basketball game Saturday night.

Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) scored six of the Falcons' points during a 10-1 second-half run which put the Wolves away . He connected on 10 of 12 free throws while SPU as a team made 24 of 32.

Seattle Pacific, after having its 15-game win streak snapped at Humboldt State Thursday, comes home with a road split and an 8-1 mark in the GNAC, 16-2 overall.

Western Oregon (3-6, 6-12), losing for the fifth time in the last seven games, was led by Robert Day's 13 points. Day was coming off a career-high 41 in a double-overtime win over Western Washington and was able to make just two baskets in 10 attempts.

The Falcons' pressure defense held Western Oregon to just 35 percent shooting (19-55), including 10 of 30 tries from the field in the second half. SPU also finished with a 39-24 command of the boards..

Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) had nine points and Adam Harris (Jr., 6-0, Fox Island, Wa./Gig Harbor) came off the bench for eight, including two treys, for SPU, which hit 45 percent from the floor.

Western Oregon led by as many as seven in the opening period before back-to-back three-pointers by Aziz and Stone ignited a 16-2 run. After taking a 27-23 lead into the locker room, the Falcons went ahead for good on a Harris trey with 15 minutes left.

SPU, which has now won five in a row against WOU, returns to Brougham Pavilion for homecoming week, beginning with Thursday's game with Saint Martin's.
