ARCATA, Calif. (Jan. 24) -- Tenth-ranked
Humboldt State got 23 points and 12 rebounds from Fred Hooks and
held on to beat No. 8 Seattle Pacific University, 84-78, snapping
the Falcons' record 15-game win streak before a capacity crowd
Thursday night at East Gym.
Nick Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington,
Wa./Burlington-Edison) paced Seattle Pacific (7-1, 15-2) with 23
while Yusef Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) added
22 and eight boards. It was the first conference loss for SPU,
which had gone undefeated since an opening-night defeat to
Indianapolis.
The Lumberjacks (16-1), winning their 13th
straight at home, are now tied with SPU atop the Great Northwest
Athletic Conference standings at 7-1. The two teams will meet
again Mar. 2 in Seattle.
The Falcons trailed 38-32 at halftime and by as
much as 10 early in the second half before rallying with a 13-3
run. Daniel Sandrin's (Jr., 6-7, Bothell, Wa./Bothell) two free
throws put SPU ahead 62-61 and later Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak
Harbor, Wa.) made it 64-62.
But GNAC scoring leader Austin Nichols answered
with a 3-pointer and Mark White's nine points in the final five
minutes helped hold Seattle Pacific at bay. Nichols finished with
21 points--13 in the second half--and White had 17.
Seattle Pacific shot 50 percent from the field
and out-rebounded Humboldt 35-29 but committed 17 turnovers--six
more than the 'Jacks. Hooks, a 6-6 sophomore, hit 8 of 13 field
goals and grabbed five offensive rebounds. Johnson finished 11 of
14 from the field while Aziz was 6-11 and made all 10 of his free
throws.
For Humboldt State, it was the first victory in
the series since 1949-a stretch of 16 consecutive losses.
