SEATTLE (Jan. 19) -- Emily Faurholt (Fr., 5-11,
Kennewick, Wa./Kennewick) and Kelley Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port
Angeles, Wa./Port Angeles) each scored 15 points to lead the
Seattle Pacific University women's basketball past Humboldt State
77-49 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at
Brougham Pavilion.
SPU is currently ranked No. 10 in the NCAA
Division II ESPN/USA Today national poll and No. 5 in West Region.
A pair of jumpers by Faurholt in the first
minute of action pushed the Falcons (14-3, 6-2) to a 6-0 lead over
the Lumberjacks (2-5, 4-11) to start the game. The Jacks came
within four points of the Falcons at the 10:37 mark on a pair of
free throws before
SPU came roaring back and built a 12-point
margin with less than three minutes in the half. A 5-0 run by HSU
cut the Falcons lead to seven entering the half. Both teams played
intense defense in the first half, combining for 28 turnovers and
12 steals in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Falcons outscored the Jacks 44-23 in the
second half on hot field-goal and free-throw shooting. SPU was
12-for-16 from the line and shot 46 percent in the half from the
floor. Berglund scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half. The
Falcons also cleaned up their offense in the second half, turning
the ball over just eight times as compared to 15 in the first
half.
The Jacks were just the opposite as they turned
the ball over three more times than they did in the first half for
a total of 28 in the game.
Kerie Hughes (Jr., 5-6, Mt. Vernon, Wa./Mt.
Vernon) joined Berglund and Faurholt in double-figures with 11
points and a game-high eight assists.
Faurholt was also the high-rebounder with
seven. She and Berglund also led the team in steals with three
apiece.
Jackie Kolesar paced HSU with 10 points.
The Falcons travel to Central Washington next
Saturday to take on the Wildcats in a conference showdown of two
second-place teams. Tip off is schedule for 5 p.m. SPU Head Coach
Gordy Presnell will be going for his 300th career victory.
