Siegel-McAfee Sparks Falcon Gymnasts to Best Opening Night Score
January 18, 2002

SEATTLE (Jan. 18) -- Senior Alison Siegel-McAfee won the vault and all-around while leading Seattle Pacific University to its highest opening night score in a defeat of both UC Davis and Wisconsin-Stout in a women's gymnastics meet at Brougham Pavilion Friday night.

The Falcons (2-0) finished with a score of 190.325 points--more than two full points better than their previous best on opening night in 1993. UC Davis (3-1) was second with 189.300 and Wisconsin Stout (0-9) was third with 172.575. Seattle Pacific has beaten UC Davis in eight of nine regular season meets in Seattle, with the Ags' sole win in 1993.

Siegel-McAfee (Sr., Oakland, Ca./Redwood Christian) won the vault with a 9.750, helping SPU manage a slight edge on that event, and was also runner-up (9.700) on floor exercise. Her four-event total was 38.600.

Flora Bare of UC Davis, the 2001 national champion in all-around, finished second to Siegel-McAfee in the all-around at 38.525. Bare was also second on vault.

Seattle Pacific freshman Corrie McDaniel (Fr., Lawrence, Ks.), who was third in the all-around (37.775), finished in a four-way tie for first on balance beam. Joining her were teammates Anastasia Ahr (So., Chelan, Wa.) and Kristen Strid (Jr., Kingsburg, Ca./King. Joint Union), all with identical scores of 9.700.

The Aggies' Ericka Ruelas (9.850) and Lynn Schwaebe (9.800) took 1-2 on the bars but falls by their teammates enabled the Falcons to take a slim lead of 0.275 after two rotations. SPU then took command after scoring 48.225 on beam to the Aggies' 48.475 on floor.

Ruelas, the reigning national champion on both bars and floor, also figured in the tie for first on beam. Tiffany Chan got the other UCD victory, scoring a 9.750 on floor.

SPU is back in the pavilion next Friday to host California at 7.
