SEATTLE (Jan 12) -- Kristin Poe (So., 5-8,
Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) recorded a 13-point, 13-rebound
double-double to lead the Seattle Pacific University women's
basketball past Western Oregon 69-58 in a Great Northwest Athletic
Conference matchup Thursday at Brougham Pavilion.
SPU is currently ranked No. 10 in the NCAA
Division II ESPN/USA Today national poll and No. 5 in West Region.
The Falcons (13-3, 5-2) were kept within
striking distance throughout the first half by the Wolves (9-6,
2-4), who captured their only lead of the game at the 10:24 mark
on a three-pointer by Emily Anderson. SPU responded with a 17-2
run capped by a Poe lay-in. The Falcons entered the locker with
their largest lead of the game to that point at 14.
Kelley Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles,
Wa./Washington State) finished the first half with 15 of her
game-high 18 points.
SPU built their largest lead of the game of 19
points at the 15:39 mark in the second half on a layup by Emily
Faurholt (Fr., 5-11, Kennewick, Wa./Kennewick).
WOU nearly climbed back into the contest with
an 18-6 run that brought the Wolves to within four points of SPU
with just 1:40 remaining in the game. The Falcons quickly
squelched the run with a 7-0 run to finish the game.
Faurholt and Stephanie Urrutia (Jr., 5-9,
Sunnyside, Wa./Sunnyside) joined Poe and Berglund in
double-figures with 11 points apiece. Urrutia also led the Falcons
defensive effort, finishing with a game-high six assists, three
blocked shots and three steals.
Heather Laats paced the Wolves with 16 points
and 15 rebounds.
The Falcons host Humboldt State this Saturday,
Jan. 19 at Brougham Pavilion. Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
