SEATTLE (Jan. 17) -- Behind Brannon Stone's 17
points and 10 rebounds, ninth-ranked Seattle Pacific University
equaled the school record for consecutive victories with its 14th
in a row, 81-56 over Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Northwest
Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Brougham Pavilion
Thursday night.
Yusef Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle,
Wa./Foster-Highline CC) added 14 points and brothers Eric Sandrin
(Sr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) and Daniel Sandrin (Jr., 6-7,
Bothell, Wa./Bothell) each had 12 points as the Falcons (6-0,
14-1) remained unbeaten in conference play.
Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.), who also had
five assists and two blocked shots, moved into No. 4 in SPU career
rebounding and No. 7 in scoring. He already holds the record for
blocked shots and is No. 2 in steals.
SPU, which also won 14 straight in 1965-66, can
break its record Saturday night when it hosts Alaska Anchorage to
conclude a seven-game homestand.
It was Stone who ignited the first Seattle
Pacific run late in the first half. He scored the first five
points of an 18-2 burst which also featured seven points by Aziz
and helped the Falcons take a 39-21 lead at halftime. The Nanooks
(0-6, 2-13) remained in contact until midway through the second
period, when SPU began to pull away with a 12-3 spurt, punctuated
by a Stone 3-pointer for a 65-45 advantage.
Steve Towne's 27 points (18 in the second half)
led Alaska Fairbanks, which lost its fifth in a row and 14th
straight in the pavilion, dating back to 1985. The Nanooks hit
only 34 percent (24-70) of their field goals, including 5-22
outside the arc. They also got 11 points and 15 boards from Jason
Williams.
Seattle Pacific converted 54 percent (32-59)
from the floor and out-rebounded the visitors 44-34.
