Ross, Lavin Win in Falcons' Indoor Track Debut

SEATTLE (Jan. 12) -- Rachel Ross won the women's mile and freshman Josie Lavin took first place in the 800 meters as the Seattle Pacific University track & field teams opened the indoor season at the Washington Preview meet at Dempsey Indoor.

Ross (Sr., Kennewick, Wa.) out-kicked the Huskies' Courtney Inman to prevail by three-tenths of a second in 5:08.20. Lavin (Fr., Bremerton, Wa./Bremerton), coming off an injury-plagued cross country campaign last fall, was the winner in the 800 in 2:20.26. Sarah Kraybill (Jr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard) was third in 2:22.95.

Other top-three finishes for the SPU women included Stephanie Huffman (Sr., Brush Prairie, Wa./Prairie), tied for second in the high jump (5-2 1/4); Dionna Anderson (Sr., Lynnwood, Wa./Edmonds-Woodway), third in the shot put (42-7); Ally Studer (So., Redmond, Wa./.Redmond), third in the pole vault (11-0 1/4) and the 1600 relay, second in 4:04.06.

The Falcon men were paced by the fourth place of Paul Mach (So., Seattle, Wa./King's) in the 800 (1:55.05). Neal Fryett (Sr., Pullman, Wa./Logos) was fifth in that race (1:56.09) and Nathanaael Castle (Sr., Gooding, Id.) was fifth in the mile (4:18.15).

The next meet is also at the Dempsey Indoor Jan. 21.
