Sandrin, Falcons' Strong Second Half Add Up to 11th Win in a Row
January 3, 2002

SEATTLE (Jan. 3) -- Eric Sandrin scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and Yusef Aziz led the way with 21 as 12th-ranked Seattle Pacific University pulled away from Northwest Nazarene to win its 11th consecutive game, 85-64, Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons shot a season-best 56 percent (33-59) from the field and forced 30 turnovers as they resumed Great Northwest Athletic Conference play and raised their record to 3-0 in league and 11-1 overall.

The win streak equals the longest in 36 years, since SPU won a record 14 in a row in 1965-66. It last won 11 straight to begin the 1993-94 season.

Ahead by eight at intermission, Sandrin (Sr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) sparked a 9-2 burst to begin the second half. Sandrin, beginning with a dunk off of a steal, scored seven of the points, pushing the lead to 15. Later, a Sandrin stuff and free throw put the Falcons in front by 24.

Northwest Nazarene (1-3, 3-8), which got no closer than 10 in the second half, was led by Josh Cooprider's 16, all of those points coming in the first half. He was able to get off only one shot in the final 20 minutes.

The Crusaders committed 18 turnovers in the first half and the Falcons converted 63 percent (17-27) of their field goals in the second period.

Eleven of their 12 opponents have been held under 69 points this season.

Both Sandrin and Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) finished with four steals apiece. Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) had three plus four assists. He hit 8-13 field goals. Sandrin led SPU with seven rebounds.

Seattle Pacific sent the Crusaders reeling early, scoring 16 unanswered points for a 16-3 lead in the first five minutes. The Falcons made five steals and Aziz finished three baskets in side and Sandrin punctuated the run with a soaring dunk from Nick Johnson's pass.

After the lead grew to 17 points, Northwest Nazarene gradually pulled closer behind the 3-point shooting of Cooprider, who sank four treys and three within a span of two minutes. SPU's lead was cut to 42-34 at halftime. SPU hosts Seattle University Saturday at 7.
