LACEY, Wash. (Dec. 8) -- Nick Johnson led a
balanced attack with 11 points and also collected nine rebounds as
Seattle Pacific University extended its winning streak to six
games with a 73-46 win over Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest
Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Saint Martin's
Pavilion.
The Falcons (2-0, 6-1), ranked 20th in NCAA
Division II, allowed the fewest total points for an opponent in 71
games in beating the Saints for the 16th time in the last 17
meetings. They forced Saint Martin's to hit just 35 percent
(17-49) from the field. It was lowest points yielded since an
84-43 win over the Saints in 1998-99.
Maurice Cato (Jr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.),
Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) and Daniel Sandrin (Jr.,
6-7, Bothell, Wa./Bothell HS) each had 10 points for SPU, which
shot 51 percent (29-57), including 9-21 3-pointers.
Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington,
Wa./Burlington-Edison) hit 5 of 8 shots and snared four offensive
boards. Stone and Jordan Lee (Fr., 6-0, University Place, Wa./Life
Christian) each connected on a pair of treys. Sandrin came off the
bench to make 4 of 5 shots in 14 minutes.
Saint Martin's (0-2, 1-7), which lost its
fourth in a row, was topped by the 12 points apiece of Nick Gibbs
and Jarel Cherry. Gerrit Eades, who entered the week averaging
16.2, had just two points in 1-6 shooting.
Its the first time in three seasons that
Seattle Pacific has won its first two conference road games. GNAC
play resumes Jan. 3 at home vs. Northwest Nazarene.
SPU travels to Las Vegas next weekend and meets
No. 8 and unbeaten Henderson State (Ar.) Saturday in the first
round of the High Desert Classic.
