LACEY, WASH. (Dec. 6) -- Kelley Berglund (Fr.,
Port Angeles, Wa./Washington State) notched her second straight
double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Seattle
Pacific University women's basketball team over Saint Martin's
College 68-53 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener
for both teams Thursday.
The Falcons (1-0, 6-0) jumped out to a 20-7
lead over the Saints (0-1, 2-3) and reached their biggest lead of
the game at 20 heading into the first half. Two for ten shooting
from the free-throw line in the first half by SMC contributed to
their first half deficit. The Saints rebounded in the second half,
outscoring the Falcons 34 to 29, but it was not enough to overcome
the first-half shooting barrage by SPU.
Stephanie Urrutia (Jr., Sunnyside,
Wa./Sunnyside) and Kristin Poe (So., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw)
joined Berglund in double figures with 15 and 10 points,
respectively. Urrutia also led the Falcons in assists with four
while Poe paced the defensive effort with a team-high four steals.
Julia Eisentrout led the Saints with 22 points.
