SEATTLE (Dec. 1) -- Yusef Aziz scored 15 points
and snared eight rebounds as 16th-ranked Seattle Pacific
University rolled to its fourth straight win, 86-56 over Hawaii
Pacific in a nonconference men's basketball game Saturday night at
Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (4-1) , who blew open the game
early in the second half, had five players in double figures,
including Maurice Cato (Jr., 6-0, Fairfiled, Ca.) with 12, plus
Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-9, Oak Harbor, Wa.) and Eric Sandrin (Sr.,
6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest) with 11 apiece. They have won 16
consecutive December games dating back to 1998.
The Sea Warriors (3-3) were paced by the 24
points of Nick Spajic, 16 of those coming in the first half.
Spajic connected on five treys, but shot just 3-9 in the second
period.
Seattle Pacific took the lead for good midway
through the opening period, led by 13 at the break and then 13-2
run to begin the second half. Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle,
Wa./Foster-Highline CC) capped the spree with a tip-in for a 54-30
advantage. Hawaii Pacific, which shot only 34 percent (21-61) from
the field, never got closer than 21 the rest of the way.
The Falcons hit a season-best 50 percent
(29-58) from the floor, including 9-21 3-pointers. Cato, Nick
Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington, Wa./Burlington-Edison) and Jordan
Lee (Fr., 6-0, University Place, Wa./Life Christian) each hit
twice from beyond the arc. Cato also had three steals as SPU
forced 22 HPU turnovers.
A 15-2 burst by Seattle Pacific gave it control
going into halftime. Aziz scored the first two baskets of the run
which put SPU ahead 27-16.
SPU, which plays its next four games on the
road, opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday at
Central Washington.
