SEATTLE (Nov. 24) -- Eric Sandrin scored nine
of his 12 points in the first half and 16th-ranked Seattle Pacific
University beat Seattle University for the 10th consecutive time,
64-49, in a nonconference men's basketball game Saturday night at
Connolly Center.
The Falcons (2-1), who also got 10 points from
Nick Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington, Wa.,/Burlington-Edison),
allowed the fewest points by an opponent in 68 games, dating back
three seasons. The Redhawks (0-2) scored just 21 points in the
first period and made just 33 percent (17-52) of their field
goals.
Sandrin (Sr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest)
scored six of the game's first 10 points and SPU never trailed. A
15-3 run early in the second half put Seattle Pacific on top,
51-29, and SU never threatened thereafter. Jesse Keely (Jr., 6-7,
Fircrest, Wa./Bellarmine) hit two baskets during the spree while
Seattle U. missed seven of eight shots.
Brian Johnson paced the Redhawks with 13
points. Eight of their 17 field goals were 3-pointers and they
rarely were able to penetrate the SPU interior defense.
Seattle Pacific, which had not held a foe under
50 points since Saint Martin's totaled only 43 in 1998-99, shot 47
percent (23-49) and committed just nine turnovers. It has not lost
to Seattle U. since the 1994-95 season. SPU hosts Northwest
College in another nonconference game Tuesday at 7:30.
