SEATTLE (Nov. 17) -- Yusef Aziz scored 17
points and pulled down nine rebounds as 16th-ranked Seattle
Pacific University notched its first victory of the season, 87-59
over Lock Haven (Pa.) in the final game of the Vitamilk tip-Off
Classic Saturday night at Brougham Pavilion.
Eric Sandrin (Sr., 6-10, Bothell,
Wa./Shorecrest) ) added 15 points and both Gene Woodard (Jr., 6-4,
Edmonds, Wa./O'Dea) and Daniel Sandrin (Jr., 6-7, Bothell,
Wa./Bothell) came off the bench for 14 apiece for the Falcons
(1-1), who forged a 10-point lead by midway through the first half
and gradually widened the gap. They hit 59 percent from the field
in the first period and 49 percent (33-68) overall.
Kirs Holtzer led the Bald Eagles (0-2) with 15.
Lock Haven committed 28 turnovers and lost the battle of the
boards, 37-26.
Nick Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington,
Wa./Burlington-Edison) and Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle,
Wa./Foster-Highline CC) were named to the all-tournament team
along with David Logan and Cedric Moodie of Indianapolis and
Northwest Nazarene's Kevin Richard. Indianapolis, which upset SPU,
68-67, Friday night, defeated Northwest Nazarene 65-58 to win
Saturday's first game.
Johnson cut through the lane for two layups
during an 8-2 spurt late in the first half after which Seattle
Pacific led 35-18. Aziz, who made 8-10 shots, scored nine in the
first half and then helped put Lock Haven away, scoring three
consecutive inside baskets to push SPU in front, 72-42, with 10:54
left.
Seattle Pacific returns to action Saturday when
they visit Seattle University for a nonconference game.
