SEATTLE (Nov. 16) -- Cedric Moodie's 17-foot
jumper with 3 seconds remaining lifted Indianapolis to a 68-67 win
over 16th ranked Seattle Pacific University in the first round of
the Vitamilk Tip-Off Classic Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons (0-1), who had gone ahead on two
free throws by Nick Johnson (Sr., 6-3, Burlington,
Wa./Burlington-Edison) with 18 seconds left, used a long inbounds
pass from Brannon Stone (Sr., 6-7, Oak Harbor, Wa.) to set-up
Yusef Aziz (Jr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster-Highline CC) for a
last-second 3-point attempt on the left wing which hit the front
of the rim as time expired.
David Logan led the Greyhounds (1-0) with 19
points before fouling out while Moodie, a 6-3 transfer from Ball
State, had 12.
Seattle Pacific, which lost its season-opener
at home for the third year in a row, was paced by Johnson's 17
while Aziz added 16 off the bench.
Indianapolis, behind Logan's trey and layup,
began an 11-2 run late in the first half to forge a 10-point lead
early in the second period. But Aziz brought SPU back and it
eventually took a 52-49 lead on four consecutive points by Eric
Sandrin (Sr., 6-10, Bothell, Wa./Shorecrest). The lead exchanged
hands seven times in the final seven minutes.
Both teams shot 40 percent or under. Seattle
Pacific hit five fewer treys but outscored the Greyhounds 19-3 at
the foul line, where Johnson and Aziz were a combined 13-15.
Johnson scored 13 of his points in the final 15 minutes. SPU faces
Lock Haven (Pa.) in the second round of the tournament Saturday at
7 while Indianapolis meets Northwest Nazarene at 5 PST.
