SEATTLE (Nov. 13) -- Seattle Pacific
University's Leah Wiiest was the sole repeat selection to the
all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball first team and
freshman Cathleen Price has been voted the conference newcomer of
the year in voting by the coaches announced Tuesday.
Wiiest (Sr., Spokane, Wa./Deer Park-Cornell), a
middle hitter, leads the playoff-bound Falcons in both kills
(3.63) and blocks (0.85). Earlier she was named to the GNAC
academic all-conference team. Wiiest was runner-up to Western
Washington's Shannon Rowland for conference player of the year.
Price (Fr., Gresham, Or./Sam Barlow), who was
also voted second team all-GNAC, owns the team's top attacking
percentage (.266) and is second in kills (3.43), service aces
(0.47) and blocks (0.83).
The Falcons' Leilani Kamahoahoa (Sr., Oregon
City, Or./Canby) and Katy Higgins (So., Kirkland, Wa./Redmond)
each received honorable mention. Kamahoahoa battled a knee injury
this season to break SPUs all-time records for kills and
digs in a career. She leads the Falcons in service aces per game
(.51) and digs (3.40). Higgins is first on the Falcons in games
played (103) and assists (11.84). Her assists average is also good
for second in the GNAC.
Seattle Pacific meets defending national
champion Hawaii Pacific in the first round of the NCAA Division II
Pacific Regional Thursday night in San Bernardino, Calif. The
winner advances to face No. 5-ranked Cal State San Bernardino in a
semifinal match Friday.
