Outright Is Out But Falcons Can Still Share First
November 1, 2001

SEATTLE, Wa. (Nov. 1)-Seattle Pacific University's hopes of an outright Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship were dashed as cross town rival Seattle University scored three times to drub the Falcons 3-0, in a women's soccer match at Interbay Stadium Thursday night.

In just its first year of varsity play, Seattle Pacific (7-4-0, 8-9-1) can still win at least a share of first with a victory in its final regular season game at Western Oregon Saturday afternoon.

The Redhawks' Heather Hartstein opened up the scoring in the first half, striking a pass from Katie Lax past Seattle Pacific keeper Jennifer Hull (5:30).

Less than five minutes later (10:17), the Redhawks' Lindsay Leeder booted an Andrea Guitierrez assist to the lower right corner of the Falcons' net, giving the SU a two-point cushion going into intermission. Seattle U's Kia Crotty finished off the scoring at 74:11. The sophomore gathered in a mishandled ball by Hull ten yards out from the goal and passed it into an open net.

The Falcons' best scoring chance came with 39 minutes to play.

Senior forward Andrea Larsen (Sr., Portlnd, Or./Central Catholic/Oklahoma State) played the ball from the left wing to midfielder Jessica Henson (Fr., Spokane, Wa./University), and from the 18-yard line, Henson left-footed a rocket toward the right upper post. Seattle University goal keeper Elizabeth Anderson leapt into the air and tipped the shot over the cross bar for one of her two saves on the night.

Hull stopped seven shots for the Falcons. Seattle University out shot Seattle Pacific 15-11.

Seattle Pacific honored Falcon seniors Larson and Erin Roberts (Sr., Issaquah, Wa./Montana) in a short ceremony preceding the match. A transfer from Oklahoma State, Larsen has led SPU in both scoring (10 goals) and total points (25). Roberts started all 17 games at sweeper.

If the Falcons win on Saturday, they will likely share the GNAC title with Seattle University. Kickoff at Western Oregon Saturday afternoon (Nov. 3) is at 1:00.
