Falcons Score 4 Times in 17 Minutes to Put Away Humboldt State
October 26, 2001

SEATTLE (Oct. 26) -- Brent Egbert's penalty kick unleashed a gush of four second-half goals in a span of 17 minutes as23rd-ranked Seattle Pacific University remained in contention for the NCAA Division II playoffs with a 5-0 victory over Humboldt State in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game played in a steady rain at Interbay Stadium Friday night.

The Falcons (10-6-1) also got goals from Grant Falco (Jr., Spokane, Wa./University), Erik Skipper (Sr., Hillsboro, Or./Hillsboro), Michael Schefter (So., Yakima, Wa./West Valley) and Andy Sather (Fr., Liberty Lake, Wa./Ferris) in clinching second place in the GNAC. Seattle University secured the title earlier in the day with a win over Western Washington. For Humboldt State (6-9-2) it was the fifth straight loss.

Falco, who scored the game's first goal in the 26th minute, set-up Egbert's (So., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) penalty shot when he was brought down by a Lumberjacks defender on the right side of the box at 60:08. Egbert buried the kick into the left corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Ahead 2-0, the Falcons poured it on. Skipper connected on curling, 25-yard shot into the upper right corner in the 66th minute. Colin Garon replaced Jay Star in the net and was greeted with two goals in his first three minutes. Schefter scored from 20-yards and Sather from 18 yards.

Although Seattle Pacific pressured the Lumberjacks from the outset, it was a defensive mixup which resulted in the game's first goal. Kirk Gammill headed down a ball to Stare but the keeper slipped and the ball ran across to Falco for a 15-yard shot at an open net.

Egbert nearly scored shortly afterward, forcing Garon to make a leaping save to knock his 20-yard shot over the bar. Early in the second half, Skipper sent Stare flying to the right post to deflect his shot wide for a corner kick. Later Skipper headed off the bar from six yards.

SPU finished with a 18-5 advantage in shots, including a decisive 10-1 count in the second half. It also had 13 corner kicks, nine coming after intermission. James Ward (Fr., Salem, Or./Sprague) and Adrian Cravalho (Jr., Mililani, Hi./Kamehameha) split the shutout in goal for the Falcons. Ward, who had scored three goals and had two assists in the previous two games, played the final six minutes at forward.

The Falcons host Western Washington in the next-to-last regular season game Wednesday night at 7.
