Peterson Boots Winner with One Minute Remaining to End SPU Women's SoccerLosing Streak
October 22, 2001

SEATTLE, Wa. (Oct. 22)-Alissa Peterson scored with one minute remaining to lift Seattle Pacific University over Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Humboldt State University 2-1, in a women's soccer game at Interbay field Monday night.

Peterson's (So., Plymouth, Mn./Wayzata/Wisconsin) goal broke a two game losing streak for Seattle Pacific (6-3-0, 7-8-1). The Falcons are in contention for the GNAC title in just their first year with women's soccer as a varsity sport.

After a scoreless first half, the Lumberjacks drew first blood as Kelly Hyde nailed a shot from ten yards out from the left side of the goal.

Hyde's shot skittered through traffic and past SPU keeper Jennifer Hull (Fr., Eugene, Or./Sheldon) at 61:41.

Seattle Pacific had not been allowed a shot in the first 22 minutes of the second half and the momentum appeared to have swung Humboldt State's way, until Andrea Larson (Sr., Portland, Or./Central Catholic/Oklahoma State) rallied the Falcons with the equalizer at 74:34.

Larsen's initial attempt bounced off the left post. The senior gathered in the rebound and shot a second blank off keeper Meghan Stewart.

After a weak clearance by the Lumberjack defense, Larsen finally hit pay dirt on her third attempt, blistering a shot past Stewart that finally connected with the left corner of the net.

The senior forward wasn't finished. With one minute remaining and overtime looming, Larsen broke away from the Humboldt defense down the right side and passed the ball across the goalmouth to Peterson. There would be no extra period. Running hard and in the right place at the right time, Peterson one-touched a shot past Stewart for the game winner.

The Falcons out shot Humboldt State 12-7 in the match. Hull saved four balls in goal.

Seattle Pacific faces off against Northwest Nazarene in another GNAC match, Saturday afternoon at Interbay. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00.
